Cloud Atlas Review

Typewriter Icon

Cloud Atlas seems to be one of the most divisive movies among critics this year. Those that love the movie see it as an ambitious, inspiring, and well-crafted tale that spans six sub-stories and weaves them into an incredible tapestry of storytelling. Those that hate it see it as a confusing, overblown, and pretentious mess. I fall into the former camp, and after watching it last Saturday with the wife, we have done nothing but talk about the movie. Be forewarned, this review will contain spoilers; stop now if you are concerned about ruining your Cloud Atlas viewing experience.

Where to start? I think for our purposes, I will treat this review as an opportunity to address the concerns of the critics/viewers that have pitched their tent in the hater camp.

Graduation (and the beat goes on)

I am participating in IUPUI’s semi-annual capstone presentations tomorrow. For those of you who don’t know what a “capstone” is, let me substitute another word then: graduation. Yes friends, tomorrow I graduate from college… finally. As I am an want to say, “the seventeen-year plan finally came together.”

Why did it take seventeen years to get through school you ask? I could offer all sorts of hollow excuses at this point, bemoaning some aspect of my life that has contributed to my slow progress through school. But all of those excuses would be only a partial truth; the entire truth lays somewhere in the margins of my 20′s. Let’s not devolve into some sordid tale of my younger days, but instead focus on what graduation means.
